The play originally written in 1990 by Dusan Kovacevic, a contemporary Serbian playwright and director, best known for his theater plays and movie scripts, the play is a work of situation comedy, defined as a comedy in which the comic effect depends chiefly upon the involvement of the main characters in a predicament or ludicrous complex of circumstances.
"The Professional" criticizes totalitarian regimes and their creators.
The play tells the story of a former university professor named Theodor, who is a bohemian writer, a member of Belgrade's intellectual circles and a passionate opponent of the Slobodan Milosevic regime.
A second character Luka enters the plot as a strange visitor who comes uninvited to Theodor's office. As the audience get to know Luka, they find out that his mission for the last ten years was to daily shadow Theodor, to write reports on his behavior and acts, to watch on him even in the most intimate moments of his life. Gradually the last ten years of their lives begin to appear, the lives of these two men with quite different destinies.
"One of the unique features of the current performance is that the actors directly address the viewers as the plot unravels, strongly involving them in the events," said Kianian. The play also featured as a comedy drama film in 2003.
The cast are Hedayat Hashemi, Bahareh Rahnama, Saeid Makek, Arash Alinejad, Ra'na Khatami, Saghar Tajik, Hossein Shariatmadari, and Behzad Haji Hasani, besides the director.
It will run through March 17 at the venue at No. 69, Sepand St., South Azodi St., Karimkhan Avenue.
