Tasua and Ashura, the 9th and 10th days of the month of Muharram, are days of mourning in Shia Islam to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS), the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed (SAWA).
The Valiasr Square in Tehran played host to the Ta'zieh performance of Ashura, known as the Battle of Karbala, on 9 September, the battle in which Imam Hossein (AS), who was the grandchild of the prophet of Islam Muhammad (SAWA) and his 72 disciples were martyred. Ta'zieh, Condolence Theater or Passion Play, is a traditional Persian theater, in which actors convey the dramatic events through music and songs.
On the Day of Tasu'a, the commemoration of death of Prophet Mohammed’s (SAWA) grandson Imam Hossein (AS) was marked with public outpourings of grief and services in Shiraz. Thousands of worshippers across the city took part in processions and services. Shiraz is a city in south-central Iran, known for its literary history and many gardens.

Each year, Muslims across the globe mark martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS) on Ashura Day which falls in the Islamic lunar month of Muharram.

Ashura involves reenactments of the Battle of Karbala in which Imam Hussein (AS) was martyred in 680 AD, and public processions of intense collective grief accompanied by poetry recitals and services during which worshippers wear black.
