• Tehran’s Gorgan Street was the venue for Muharram mourning rituals on the of the Islamic month calendar. Millions of Muslim worshippers across the world took part in processions and services to mark the holiest days in the Shia calendar, Tasua and Ashura.

  • The Iranian Artists Forum is the venue for passion plays that depict the martyrdom of Imam Hossein (AS), the third Shia Imam, in the Battle of Karbala. The Battle of Karbala took place on Muharram 10, in the year 61 AH of the Islamic calendar in Karbala, in present-day Iraq. The battle took place between a small group of supporters and relatives of Prophet Mohammad's grandson, Hossein ibn Ali, and a larger military detachment from the forces of Yazid I, the Umayyad caliph.

  • The City Theater of Tehran continues to play host to passion plays in the mourning month of Muharram which marks the martyrdom of Imam Hossein (AS), the third Shia Imam. The passion play theater has a long tradition in Iran, the play of the suffering and martyrdom of Imam Hossein and his 72 companions in the day of Ashura.

  • Concurrent with the mourning month of Muharram that marks the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hossein (AS), the third Shia Imam and grandson of the Prophet Mohammad (SAWA), several passion plays (Ta’zieh) are being performed every day in the open space of the Iranian Artists Forum in Tehran.
