• The ceremony of Sham-e Ghariban, the eleventh night of Muharram dedicated to the destitute of Karbala, was held Thursday night in the City Theater of Tehran. Ashura involves reenactments of the Battle of Karbala in which Imam Hussein (AS) was martyred in 680 AD, and public processions of intense collective grief accompanied by poetry recitals and services during which worshippers wear black.

  • The City Theater of Tehran continues to play host to passion plays in the mourning month of Muharram which marks the martyrdom of Imam Hossein (AS), the third Shia Imam. The passion play theater has a long tradition in Iran, the play of the suffering and martyrdom of Imam Hossein and his 72 companions in the day of Ashura.

  • City Theater of Tehran is playing host to passion plays (Ta'zieh) until 20 September.A Passion play is a dramatic presentation depicting the martyrdom of Imam Hossein (AS) in Karbala. The programs start at 18:30 in the evening.

  • Special street performances by 6 theatre groups were held outside the main building of Tehran City Theater on the sixth and seventh days of Persian New Year Nowruz, which is a peak season in Iran and several other countries in West Asia.
