Unveil Limited’s THE SHOPHOUSE gallery concept in Hong Kong is currently presenting a group exhibition of new works by a diverse roster of international artists. Entitled “I & the ME,” the presentation features two pieces by each artist — one work references the subjective side or “I” of the artist while the other piece is informed by their objective side or “Me.” The latter also references the art market and how artists navigate today’s global art sector.
The show’s title was inspired by the 1800s sociologist George Herbet Mead’s theory of self. Mead theories that individual identities were shaped by the dynamic relations between the “I” and the “ME.” The “ME” is informed by external factors and experiences while the “I” references how we respond to these attitudes.
In regards to the themes presented, the gallery expressed: “The art world has radically transformed in the past thirty years, turning into a multibillion-dollar international industry. Artists and their career are becoming commanded by the market system, often packaged as a celebrity with unceasing output for the growing demand in consumer culture, sought after as profit generators of the commercial powerhouse. Would artists be affected in expressing themselves under such influence?”
Participating artists include Anders Lindseth, Iabadiou Piko, Josh Reames, Julian Watts, Kour Pour, Mahsa Tehrani, Osamu Kobayashi, Yves Scherer and Zhang Ji. Check out installation views for “I & the ME” in the slide above.
