‘A Single Frame: Celebrating Twenty Years of the Society of Motion Picture Still Photographers (SMPSP)’ is the name of the exhibit of 35 set photos that were taken during film productions all over the world by the still photographers of the SMPSP, Mehr News Agency reported.
SMPSP was founded in 1995 as a nonprofit, honorary organization dedicated to the art of motion picture still photography.
Its goals include the promotion of archival preservation of still pictures shot during the production of motion pictures for their historical and cultural importance and to provide a forum for the members to exchange ideas and discuss the ever changing issues facing photographers today.
From Majidi, a member of the SMPSP, a photo from the movie ‘M like Mother’ (2006) directed by the late filmmaker Rasoul Mollaqolipour is showcased at the event.
The exhibit covers images spanning nearly 40 years of the SMPSP’s work, including shots taken on the sets of films such as ‘Raging Bull’ (1980) and ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ (2015), and portraits of Julia Roberts in ‘Erin Brockovich’ (2000) and Joel and Ethan Coen on the set of ‘The Big Lebowski’ (1998).
Taken on movie sets around the globe, from Los Angeles to Shanghai, Australia to Germany and Tehran to Ireland, the photos on display convey a unique perspective on the process of filmmaking, through the lenses of the unique artists.
Majidi, 38, studied at the art department of the Tehran University’s Faculty of Cinema and Theatre and earned a bachelor’s degree in cinematography orientation. He started his career as a professional still photographer in 2003 with Asghar Farhadi’s movie ‘Beautiful City’.
He was the still photographer of Farhadi’s movies ‘A Separation’ and ‘The Salesman’ which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2012 and 2017 respectively.
The LA exhibit is open until January 1, 2018.
