Director of the 35th Fajr International Theater Festival's International Section Mehrdad Rayani-Makhsous said this year's event will host 10 Iranian plays and 20 foreign ones from 12 countries including Spain, France, Iraq, Turkey, Georgia, Poland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Greece and Japan as well as joint production of Iran and Netherlands in its Competition Section.

He added that over 250 submissions have been received by the festival's secretariat.

Rayani-Makhsous described the number of foreign participants in the festival this year as 'unprecedented'.

The plays include 'One' by Judith de Joode from the Netherlands, 'Choir of the Orphans' by Jerzy Zon from Poland, 'I, Sisyphus' by Veselka Kuncheva from Bulgaria, 'The Lower Depths' by Davit Duishvili and 'Psychosis' by Maka Natsvlishvili, both from Georgia, 'You're Not a Fish After All' by Mihran Tomasyan from Turkey, and 'Loan' by Amer Abolheil from Iraq.

"Most of the foreign plays are mute shows that use no speech to get the meaning across," he said. "Instead, the focus is on visual elements and the use of technology and modern methods in theater."

The 35th Fajr International Theater Festival will be held from January 20 to 31 in Tehran and a number of provinces across the country.
