The project, which is the dramatized version of some parts of the ‘Shahnameh,’ Ferdowsi’s magnum opus, had its first performance on Monday.

Organized by the Iranian Embassy in Sofia, the project is organized for the occasion of 1,010th anniversary of the book’s compilation.

On the sidelines of this performance, an exhibition of Iranian handicrafts and the Bulgarian version of ‘Shahnameh’ are also on display.

The play will be performed for two years (a total of 20 performances) by a team of 20, in one of the best theaters in the National Palace of Culture in Sofia, which has 400 seats.

‘Shahnameh’ is an epic poem written by the Persian poet Ferdowsi between c. 977 and 1010 CE and is the national epic of Greater Iran.

‘Shahnameh,’ which is the world’s longest epic poem, with some 50,000 couplets, was created by a single poet, who revives national and epic stories and the history of Iran while breathing new life into Persian language and literature. Therefore, he enjoys a lofty status and is venerated as Iran’s national poet.

Ferdowsi spent over three decades writing the ‘Shahnameh’. It is twice as long as Homer’s ‘Iliad’ and ‘Odyssey’ combined. The book about Persian kings, written entirely in Persian, played a key role in the revival of this language and made a significant contribution to the development of Persian literature
