Esmaeili succeeds Seyyed Abbas Salehi, who was the minister from 2017-21.

“Based on Article 87 and Article 133 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and with regard to the Iranian Parliament’s vote of confidence on August 26, I appoint you as the Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance to apply all your abilities and use competent and experienced managers to advance the government’s program and priorities,” said Raeisi.

The newly-elected president was sworn in as Iran’s eighth president on August 5, after winning the June 18 presidential election.

Esmaeili was born in 1975 in Kabudar Ahang County, Hamedan, in west-central Iran. He holds a doctorate in political science from the Institute of Humanities and Cultural Studies and is on the faculty of the University of Tehran.
