Some well-known figures in American and Iranian poetry such as Charles Bernstein, Pierre Joris and Sepideh Jodeyri are among the poets participating in the event entitled “A Night with American Poets against U.S. Sanctions on Iran”.

The session will reflect the suffering of the people of Iran since U.S. President Donald Trump imposed new economic sanctions on the country, Busboys and Poets has said in a statement.

Trump has himself labeled the sanctions as the “toughest ever”.

According to the United Nations Special Rapporteur Idriss Jazairy, “these unjust and harmful sanctions are destroying the economy and currency of Iran, driving millions of people into poverty and making imported goods unaffordable.”

Trump withdrew Washington unilaterally from the 2015 nuclear deal in May and ordered sanctions against Iran. The first round of sanctions went into force on August 6 and the second round, which targets Iran’s oil exports and banks, were snapped back on November 4.
