The Iranian documentary ‘Overruled’ will compete in the 4th International Afghan Documentary Film Festival (ADFF) in Stockholm.
Co-directed by Farnaz and Mohammadreza Jourabchian, and edited by Bahman Kiarostami (son of the late Iranian auteur Abbas Kiarostami), the film depicts the lives and hopes of young Afghan refugees in Iran working as ball boys in the tennis clubs in affluent districts of northern Tehran.
They learn tennis and make progress in the game in order to find social acceptance. But no matter how good they become, they are socially ostracized and remain outsiders in the eyes of Iranians.
The documentary introduces to the audience an important and often overlooked part of the problems of refugees in the Middle East, social rejection, Cinematicket.org reported.
It has participated in several international festivals in Canada, Ireland, Spain and Russia and won awards in Iran, Lebanon and India.
A total of 16 films will be shown at the ADFF on May 12. Beside Iran, there are movies from Germany, Australia, Canada, France, Italy and Afghanistan attending the event.
Founded in 2013, the ADFF focuses on films whose central theme involves Afghanistan. It presents stories of lives affected by war, discrimination and injustice. The stories are of people who have resisted oppression and fought against violence to create a more human world.
