State Secretary for Culture and Media Monika Grütters awarded the prize to Karamizade.

‘Empty Nets,’ produced by Majid Barzegar, narrates the story of Amir, a young Iranian who fishes in the Caspian Sea and tries to pay for his marriage.

According to the festival’s jury panel, ‘Empty Nets’ deals with the fate of Amir and looks at the effects of global problems and political tensions – a social and brilliant story with a coherent and artistic atmosphere.

The German Screenplay Award has been awarded since 1988. It is the most highly endowed and most prestigious award for screenwriters in Germany.

Karamizade (1978, Iran) has lived in Germany since 1985 and studied film directing. He is a member of Filmgruppe NUR, a group of filmmakers from all over the world.

The International Film Festival Rotterdam 2009 will screen his two short films ‘Ants’ (2008) and ‘Packing’ (2009).
