Scheduled on August 16, the screening will be held at Shahnaz Hall of the forum and include three films about Hadid. No lecture or round table is planned.
“Phaeno, Building as Landscape” is one of the three films. It is about Phaeno Science Center in the city of Wolfsburg, Germany.
Phaeno is part of urban planning by Wolfsburg. In 1998, urban planners in the city were developing a plot of vacant, public land adjacent to Wolfsburg Railway Station. In 2000, they held an architectural design competition where Hadid’s design was accepted.
Hadid’s design is a great concrete and glass triangle. The project satisfied two ambitions: for Hadid, it was one of her first major works; and for the city, it was a statement of identity. Built on large cone bases housing museum, café, and gift shop areas, the main exhibition hall contains over 250 scientific interactive installations providing learning and amusement for children and adults. The building and the public space below make an urban landscape.
The movie “Phaeno, Building as Landscape” is 27 minutes long. It is part of the series “Architectures, Achievements in Modern Architecture,” directed by a group of directors and produced between 2007 and 2016 by ARTE France, Films d’Ici, Georges Pompidou Center, Musee d’Orsay and Direction de la l’Architecture.
Art documentary “Secret Knowledge: Zaha Hadid on Kazimir Malevich” is another film to be screened on Thursday. In the film, Hadid explains how her work has roots in an art movement that is 100 years old. She draws on the influence of Polish-Russian avant-garde artist and art theoretician Kazimir Malevich (1879-1935) in her architecture.
From 1923 to the early 1930s, Malevich produced several three-dimensional models, assemblages of abstract forms which appear similar to models of skyscrapers called “arkhitektons“.
In arkhitektons, a series of prismatic, quasi architectural sculptures, Malevich sought to demonstrate the timeless laws of architecture underlying the ever changing demands of function.
A production of BBC, “Secret Knowledge: Zaha Hadid on Kazimir Malevich” is 30 minutes long. However, 15 minutes of the film will be screened at the program.
Also to be screened is “Zaha Hadid Architects.” It is a 10-minute film summing up a selection from the 950 projects designed by the London-based studio of Zaha Hadid Architects. The film shows some architects working in the studio explaining their ideas and approaches.
The screening event is free and open to the public. Iranian Artists Forum is located in Artists Park on Iranshahr Street.
Zaha Hadid is described as “Queen of the Curve.” From Aquatics Center and Serpentine Sackler Gallery in London to her monumental projects in Beijing and Baku, Hadid’s buildings are everywhere.
She was the first woman to receive the 2004 Pritzker Architecture Prize sponsored by the global hospitality company of HYATT. She received the UK’s most prestigious architectural award, the Stirling Prize, in 2010 and 2011. In 2012, she was made a Dame by Elizabeth II for services to architecture, and in 2015 she became the first and only woman to be awarded the Royal Gold Medal from the Royal Institute of British Architects.
